Cost Accountant

Introduction

Are you a Cost Accountant who enjoys working with numbers, analysing data and turning financial and operational information into meaningful business insights?

Our client, a leading manufacturing organisation, is looking for a Cost Accountant to join their Finance team. This role has a strong focus on product costing, BOM management, variance analysis, profitability and BI reporting, providing critical financial insights to support commercial and operational decision-making.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain accurate new product and product costings.
  • Own and maintain the integrity and accuracy of Bills of Materials (BOMs) within the ERP system.
  • Perform standard vs actual cost analysis and investigate cost variances and root causes.
  • Analyse product-level costs, margins and profitability.
  • Support pricing decisions through detailed costing, margin and profitability analysis.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cost modelling.
  • Analyse raw material, process, production and supplier costs.
  • Work closely with Procurement to assess supplier pricing and its impact on profitability.
  • Prepare and maintain BI reports and dashboards to support business decision-making.
  • Prepare and distribute daily sales reports and weekly/monthly cost analysis reports.
  • Analyse financial and operational data to identify trends, risks, cost-saving opportunities and areas for improvement.
  • Monitor key manufacturing KPIs including OEE, scrap and waste, production uptime, cost per unit and margin trends.
  • Provide management with accurate and meaningful costing information, including insightful commentary and recommendations.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, automation and continuous improvement.
  • Drive improvements in costing accuracy, financial processes, ERP utilisation and reporting.
  • Support the costing and processing of assemblies.
  • Assist with month-end costing and reporting.
  • Work collaboratively with Finance, Production, Procurement and other business units.
  • Assist with ad-hoc financial and commercial projects as required

Experiences & Qualifications

  • BCom Accounting, Management Accounting, Cost Accounting or relevant tertiary qualification.
  • A Costing qualification will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 3 years’ commercial accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of product costing and cost accounting.
  • Proven experience with Bills of Materials (BOMs) and manufacturing costing.
  • Strong experience in standard vs actual cost analysis and variance investigation.
  • Experience in profitability and margin analysis.
  • Advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Strong ERP experience, particularly relating to costing and master data.
  • Experience with BI reporting / Power BI will be advantageous.
  • Strong financial modelling, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and reporting accuracy.
  • Ability to work with large datasets and translate complex information into practical commercial insights.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to identify opportunities to improve profitability.
